Eddy Suñol Theater celebrates its 85 years

With an artistic gala that represented the history of the institution from its beginnings, Holguín celebrated the 85th anniversary of the Eddy Suñol Theater, the main coliseum of the City of Parks.

Artists such as the companies Codanza, La Campana and the oral storytelling company Palabras al Viento, the Rodrigo Prats Lyric Theater and the Holguín Chamber Orchestra converged on stage to commemorate June 2, 1939, the day the building was born under the name by Wenceslao Infante.

The show, with artistic direction by maestro Orestes Saavedra, was the opportunity to pay tribute to artists such as the singer María Luisa Clark and the pianist Frank Fernández, whose careers are closely linked to the emblematic art deco colossus, erected in the vicinity of the Calixto García Íñiguez Park .

The opportunity was ideal to present the Alberto Davalos 2024 Award, awarded annually by the Provincial Council of the Performing Arts, to the dancer and teacher Vianki González for her contributions to the dance development of the city and the training of new generations.

Likewise, the Eddy Suñol Theater distinction was awarded to Jorge Hidalgo Pimentel, Gilberto González Seik, Julio Méndez Rivero and Ricardo Ronda Chacón, for their contributions to the city’s culture.

The Eddy Suñol Theater constitutes an outstanding stage in the territory and its consolidation as the main space for the performing arts in Holguín was linked to the teacher Raúl Camayd, who conceived it as the headquarters of the Rodrigo Prats Lyric Theater, which is why the main room bears his name. .

For more than eight decades, the history of theater protects the passage of figures such as Libertad Lamarque, Jorge Negrete, Omara Portuondo, Vladimir Malakhov and Carlos Acosta.
