Just nine months after starting its flights between Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, and Havana, the Bolivian Aviation company decided to suspend this itinerary starting next July 25picked up Online Aviation.

The state airline, which operates with a weekly flight to Cuba on Boeing 737-800 aircraft, disembarked in the Caribbean in October 2023 as part of an expansion that included adding flights to Caracas, Venezuela, and Asunción, Paraguay. The airline maintains the two mentioned destinations unchanged.

In an interview with local media, the general manager of Boliviana de Aviación, Ronald Casso, reported on the airline’s movements. The reasons for the cancellation of operations to Cuba were not revealed.

This is another loss of connectivity of the Island with South America at a time when the authorities are trying to boost tourism figures and establish goals that they have not been able to meet since 2019.

At the beginning of this year, Argentine Airlines suspended its flights to Havanaand then Cuban Aviation suspended its operations to the Argentine capital due to problems with jet fuel suppliers. Another connection that the Island lost was Medellín-Havana, operated by Wingothe only low-cost airline in South America that flew to Cuba.

As of July 2, Avianca will resume its flights between Bogotá and Havana, and, recently, the Dominican company Arajet requested to connect the Cuban capital with Santo Domingo.

At this time, LATAM, via Lima, and Copa Airlines, via Panama City/Tocumen, are the main connection routes to reach Cuba from South America.

Other specific operations in the region are offered by Conviasa and Cubana de Aviación offer weekly flights between Caracas, Venezuela, and Havana. FlyAllways operates flights from Georgetown, Guyana, to Havana and Santiago de Cuba and SKY High Dominicana connects the Cuban and Guyanese capitals. These flights mainly move Cuban citizens seeking a US visa and shopping tourism.
