In the disciplines of skating and athletics, the medals came for the Department, whose competitions were held for 15 days in Valledupar and Bogotá, respectively. These sports have the absolute support of the Government of Magdalena, through Indeportes, with the Popular and High Performance Schools, ratifying its commitment to children and youth.

The Magdalena delegation achieved six medals in the final phase of the Intercollegiate Games of the 2023 edition, which were held in Valledupar and Bogotá, respectively. Those in charge of obtaining the medals were the skaters Gabriela Peñaranda Medina and Shelcey Meléndez Vélez, and the athletes Nataly Yetsenia Quiroga Abril, Digna Rosa Arteaga Morrón, Juan Therán García and Santiago Therán.

Skaters Gabriela Peñaranda Medina and Shelcey Meléndez Vélez won two silver medals for Magdalena, being the first to open the victorious path. These young women won silver medals in the 100 meter lane events, junior category, and 800 meter sprints.

Peñaranda Medina, representing the La Presentación de Santa Marta school, demonstrated all its potential in a circuit that was completed at the La Casa en el Aire monument, in Valledupar, while Meléndez Vélez, from the Liceo San Marcos Magdalena school, did the same. own at the Elías Ochoa skatedrome in the capital of Cesar.

In the competitions that took place in the athletics stadium of the Unidad Deportiva El Salitre (UDS), in Bogotá, the first to obtain a medal in this discipline for the Department was Nataly Yetsenia Quiroga, a student at the IED Normal San Pedro Alejandrino , from Santa Marta, by taking second place in the high jump test, junior category, with a mark of 1.43 meters, winning the silver medal.

Quiroga Abril fought intensely in each of the attempts to stay on the podium, only being surpassed by the Bolivarian Isabela Palencia Osta, who took the gold metal, while the Tolima native Mariana Sierra Céspedes placed third with the bronze.

“I concentrated a lot on each jump and that was important for me to be on the podium and give a new medal to Magdalena and the first to my school,” Nataly Quiroga Abril said at the end of the test.

Continuing with the streak of good results for Magdalena, Digna Rosa Arteaga Morrón, a student at the Edgardo Vives Campo school in Santa Marta, joined us, who won the bronze medal in the junior pentathlon event.

The other bronze medal was won by Juan Therán García, from the Hugo J. Bermúdez school, in Santa Marta, who placed third in the hexathlon competition, pre-youth category.

GOLD HAS ARRIVED

On the last day of athletics, Santiago Therán, from the Hugo J. Bermúdez school, in Santa Marta, dressed as a hero in the triple jump event, youth category, and won the gold medal for Magdalena. Samario made a record of 15.09 meters to stay in first place in this queen event, beating Daniel Romero, from Casanare, and Jayirson Hinestroza, from Risaralda.

Therán demonstrated once again the process he carries out in this discipline, through the Magdalena Athletics League, which has the unrestricted support of the Magdalena Government.

In this way, the Magdalen delegation won six medals in the final of the 2023 Intercollegiate Games, of which, one is gold, three are silver and two are bronze.

GOVERNMENT SUPPORT OF CHANGE

It is worth mentioning that skating and athletics are disciplines supported by the Government of Magdalena, through Indeportes, with the Popular Sports Schools in the municipalities of the Department and the support for athletes who make up the High Performance School, initiatives promoted by Carlos Caicedo and that continue today with Rafael Alejandro Martínez.

The Governments of Change ratify their commitment to children and youth, providing them with better spaces and more opportunities to develop their sports skills, which serves as a tool to overcome poverty in Magdalena.
