In a socialization event, indigenous authorities, social leaders, actors in the health system and the community in general highlighted the successful work of the extramural health program of the San José de Maicao Hospital, in the department of La Guajira. The exhaustive sessions carried out in various communities have had a significant impact on the health and well-being of the inhabitants of La Guajira.

Despite the multiple challenges of accessing these communities, such as internal conflicts, adverse natural conditions, and complex routes, the extramural teams strived to fulfill their mission of providing comprehensive, quality care. During the visit, Superintendent Luis Carlos Leal Angarita highlighted the work of the extramural teams of San José de Maicao, as well as the determined work on the part of the intervening agent, Larry Laza Barrios and his collaborators from the ESE, and described this effort as “an example for any health care center nationwide.”

In communities such as Ipapture, Wourre, Limoncito and Ishamana, more than 400 health brigades linked to the San José de Maicao Hospital were carried out, offering 15,014 medical, nursing, social work, psychology, nutrition and vaccination services, benefiting more than 11,500 people.

Despite the multiple challenges that accessing these communities represented, such as internal conflicts, adverse natural conditions and complex routes, priority was given to health care for children under five years of age and pregnant and lactating mothers, and more than 9,000 general medical consultations were carried out. , 2,377 people received nursing care and around 2,000 doses of vaccines were administered.

The extramural groups of the San José de Maicao Hospital are made up of doctors, nurses, nutritionists, psychologists and social workers, who planned and organized the visits with the objective of identifying, promoting and maintaining the health of families.
