Children take part in the “Bearers of Tradition” workshop, taught by the living human treasure of the Aysén region, Carlos Castillo.

A group of students from the Altamira School arrived at the Chilean Chamber of Construction (CChC) in Coyhaique with the aim of learning about the use of tile in the interior design of buildings.

The young people are part of the “Bearers of Tradition” workshop that is carried out at the educational establishment with the support of the Heritage Service and which, in this case, is taught by the Living Human Treasure, and cultist of the Aysén Region Carlos Castillo.

During the visit, the students spoke with the architect Pedro Staudt, a partner of the CChC and part of the company Staud Arquitectura, who was in charge of the design of the chamber building that was built in 2015, which has one of its walls , both on the first and second floor, with beech shingle cladding.

The architect told the attentive students why this element is used, its characteristics and durability over time. “We mostly place them inside, in some houses also outside, but we like them inside, because they are beautiful to look at, and obviously they last forever indoors,” explained Pedro Staudt.

For the children it was a good experience, and mainly they rescued the fact that this tradition endures over time. “I really liked the experience of coming to see the tiles on the walls, I was very surprised that the tiles were kept in good condition,” explained Sofía, a student at the school.

His opinion was shared by León, another member of the Tradition Bearers workshop. “It was very interesting, I like that there are people who put them up and continue to live this passion,” explained the young man.

The Altamira school workshop is led by Carlos Castillo, artisan weaver and Living Human Treasure of the region, who explained part of what is expected to be passed on to the children with these activities.

“We are doing several work sessions to be able to teach them and so that they know the use of the artisanal tile, its importance in the historical context of the region and also the important use of wood,” explained the cultivator.

The visit of the students of the Altamira School to the CChC Coyhaique was carried out in the context of session No. 2 of the workshop, which included learning about other spaces in the city, such as a private home that uses the tile outdoors and also the center cultural of the regional capital.
