After ten hours of debate, the initiative had a tie of 36 votes in favor and 36 against. According to the entity’s regulations, a new vote was held that resulted in the same result.

Given this, Argentine Vice President Victoria Villarruel, who is also the head of the Senate, broke the tie with her vote in favor of the general approval of the regulations.

The Government of Javier Milei reacted to the approval in the Argentine Senate of the Bases Law, an extensive initiative promoted by the president with the aim of deepening the adjustment and deregulating the economy.

“The Office of the President celebrates the historic general approval of the Law Bases and Points for the Freedom of Argentines in the Honorable Senate of the Nation,” reads the statement published by the Office of the President on social networks.

The particular debate on the law is still pending, which must return to the Chamber of Deputies.

Since early hours, peaceful mobilizations have been carried out near Congress to reiterate the rejection of the Base Law, which were brutally repressed by the police on several occasions.

The protests began when the police repressed a group of people who were trying to break through the fences that isolated Congress with gas, rubber bullets and tanker trucks. The protesters responded by throwing stones at the uniformed officers.

Seven people, including five opposition deputies, were treated at a hospital after being gassed by the police, the Ministry of Health reported, and dozens were treated at the scene after being affected by the fumes.

The rejection of the so-called Bases Law by social movements and organizations has to do with the fact that it contains a labor reform, promotes privatizations and more layoffs, promotes the exploitation of natural resources by foreign companies, among other controversial points.

After the approval of the controversial law in the Senate, the security forces repressed the protesters who gathered again outside Congress, as well as banging pots and pans in several cities as a gesture of discontent.
