In 2009, Sanjuana Maldonado Amaya was arrested along with other men outside a commercial establishment, after being accused of participating in organized crime and aggravated kidnapping of a clothing merchant. However, the story behind this version of the authorities has a background of gender violence and abuse of authority against them.
15 years have passed since Sanjuana was arrested by the then Deputy Attorney General’s Office for Specialized Investigation in Organized Crime (SIEDO), prosecuted and tried in Matehuala for kidnapping, sentenced to 30 years in prison and admitted to the Xolol prison, in Tancanhuits. This, despite the fact that her then partner and another subject had extorted her to participate in the collection of money, having suffered abuse from elements of the SIEDO, and not having accepted her statement.
The organization “Perteneces” has documented Sanjuana’s case, and has followed up on his process, demanding his release. Nevertheless, The efforts made by the law enforcement authorities have been insufficient.
At the end of April, organizations presented more than 18 thousand signatures to the State Congress to support the petition to grant clemency to Sanjuana.
