Their report highlighted that at the end of 2023, the 10% of children between 5 and 17 years old were doing child labor.

This, he clarified, not only addresses those tasks that are financially remunerated, but also tasks at home for more than 15 unpaid hours a week.

Although this incidence decreased compared to 2022, when it was 11.1%, the LEE questioned that “a considerable proportion of children and, especially, girls “They are involved in unpaid domestic work.”

This, he continued, would not be reflected in the rate of child labor, and would be a situation that widens the gender gap, since it mainly affects girls, who cannot carry out their academic training.

In fact, child labor in girls has an incidence of 12.7%, while in children it is 7.5%.

“The main reasons why boys and girls work are need to contribute to the family economy and help with household chores. Researchers indicate that, in many cases, once minors leave school and start making money, it is very difficult for them to return,” said the LEE.

“Not only child labor, but the recruitment of minors by armed groups, exposure to the consumption of psychoactive substances, teenage pregnancy and sexual exploitation, among others, are the risks to which minors are exposed in Colombia” , stated Gloria Bernal, director of LEE at Javeriana.
