Municipality of Viña del Mar addresses damage to homes and takes preventive actions due to flooding of the Marga Marga estuary channel

Landslides, fallen trees, blown-off roofs, houses affected by leaks and flooding – quickly attended to by municipal teams – are the main damage recorded in Viña del Mar as a result of the intense frontal system that affects the central-southern area of the country.

This was reported by the Mayor Macarena Ripamonti, who after leading the Communal Disaster Risk Management Committee (COGRID) that was held at the Sausalito Stadium, indicated that the city has responded appropriately to the storm.

“Between last night until COGRID this morning at 11:00 a.m., we have good reports. The city has resisted, at least the first night well. A count was made of all the emergency alerts that existed in the territory, which were more than 50, and the majority have been controlled. “We are working closely with the electrical companies to restore services, waiting for them to give us the go-ahead so we can intervene to avoid electrical problems and the impact of our workers,” detailed the communal authority.

Regarding housing, the mayor specified that “We have around 42 affected, 3 in zone zero and in the rest of the commune. Of them, 27 are of medium severity and DIDECO teams are already deployed to apply the FIBE sheet, a SECPLA team to prepare a technical report. In all cases it has been recommended that they be able to transfer them to shelters and since the families have not wanted to, we have contributed to moving them to other places of residence with relatives who have been able to receive them.”

Regarding ground zero affected by the megafire, the communal authority indicated that “So far we have had some minor landslides that have not endangered people’s lives. The specific damage has been to some homes that have had water entering them, we have already gone to assist them, and also roof blasting, in different sectors, such as Achupallas, Lomas La Torre and Monte Sinaí.”

Regarding the operation of shelters, he reported that in the gymnasium of the Liceo Bicentenario “There are 40 people sheltered, most of them homeless, where they are being cared for with food teams, breakfasts, dinners, and also a security team to avoid any type of impact on a protocol for the communities.”

At the community level, the Mayor Ripamont highlighted that “Throughout the night, the municipal emergency teams were monitoring the storm situation and attending to the requirements of the community in the territory, which will continue to be deployed on the ground as long as the hydrometeorological event lasts.”

“We have 10 security teams deployed in different sectors of the territory. A team that receives specific complaints about the impact of housing, for emergencies and of homeless people who need shelter. All with a very fast response time. During the night, in more than 100 points we delivered river bags and also attended to roof blasting, and all the assistance that we have been able to provide as a municipality.”, the mayor explained.

Regarding the situation in Cochoa, the community leader reported that contact was made with all the residents of the sector, from Euromarina I and with all the fishermen.

“A preventive evacuation was carried out and we are in direct contact with the two building administrations, both Eurovista and Euromarina II, to constantly monitor the situation. Only the Presidential Delegation through the Carabineros can instruct a forced evacuation.”he pointed out.

Minor Emergencies

For his part, the prefect of Carabineros, Colonel Leonardo Cárdenashe indicated “that we have been actively and permanently patrolling, and providing recommendations since we are facing the developing frontal system.”

As a preventive measure, this afternoon the passage to Perú Avenue was closed due to the increase in tides, so Colonel Cárdenas called for compliance with this measure: “We are in a weather event with a yellow alert condition, with winds of 60, 70 km/hour, therefore, the conditions are not there to expose ourselves to carrying out tourist actions.”

Meanwhile, the 2nd commander of the Viña del Mar Fire Department, Sebastián Páez, reported that they keep more than 90 volunteers from the 10 companies attentive to any requirement and the USAR team is also on alert.

Regarding night work, Páez pointed out “that we were attending to minor emergencies, all controlled quickly.”

Estero Marga Marga

Regarding the increase in the flow of the Estero Marga Marga, the communal chief indicated that “The previous days we managed the estuary box, we even moved certain infrastructure to contribute to the advancement of the channel; We contacted the president of the Marga Marga fair, María Marín, to be able to move some modules to prevent them from being displaced. We contacted the parking lot concessionaires so that they give instructions not to receive vehicles, however, there are always people who park irregularly elsewhere.”

“At this moment we are doing two relevant actions regarding the channel: making contact with established businesses that are close to the perimeter of the Marga Marga estuary so that they can receive assistance and enable, for example, sandbags and prevent water from entering case of any overflowhe added.
