Winslet didn’t hold back when it came to talking about the iconic “Titanic” scene in which her character kisses Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack while they stand at the front of the famous ship, telling Vanity Fair in an interview published this week that the kiss “wasn’t as good as it’s cracked up to be.”

“My God, he’s such a romantic, isn’t he?” she said, rewatching the scene. “No wonder all the girls in the world wanted to kiss Leonardo DiCaprio.”

Winslet said there were a couple of factors that complicated the filming of this scene, primarily the fact that she was tasked with touching up her and DiCaprio’s makeup between takes, because the crew couldn’t get to them easily or quickly. Then there was the kiss, which turned into a “disaster” when the two shades of makeup they were wearing were combined.

“So we kept kissing… and I ended up looking like I’d been sucking on a candy bar after each take because her makeup was coming off all over me,” she said.

In fact, Kate Winslet described the filming of this scene as a “nightmare” because DiCaprio “couldn’t stop laughing” and because she “couldn’t breathe in that damn corset” she was wearing.

Ultimately, the 1997 classic directed by James Cameron became one of the most beloved and successful films of all time.

“I think it’s that movie that continues to make people talk,” he says. “Whole generations of people are discovering the film or seeing it for the first time, and there’s something extraordinary about that.”
