Minister Petri, in his first meeting with the group, highlighted the importance of international cooperation in times of crisis. In addition, he held a meeting with the US Secretary of Defense to discuss the modernization of the Argentine Armed Forces and thank them for their support in the acquisition of F-16 aircraft.
“As new members, we come with a spirit of learning and are committed to working closely with our international partners to achieve our shared goals of peace and stability,” Petri highlighted.
“The defense of freedom does not depend on a single nation, it requires the collective action of all countries that believe in freedom and democracy as an instrument to make it possible”he asserted.
During the closing of his speech, Minister Petri expressed his support for Ukraine, recalling the words of John Kennedy: “Those who seek power on the back of a tiger end up inside it.”
“We cannot allow tyranny to prevail, we cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Let us fight for a free world, it is a fight we will never regret. And as my President says, Long live Freedom “Damn it!” he concluded.
About the Ukraine Defense Contact Group
It was created by the United States and its allies on April 26, 2022, two months after the start of the war in Ukraine. Through February 2023, group members have committed $50 billion in security assistance, including tanks, armored vehicles, artillery systems and air defense.
Argentina’s participation carries several significant benefits. Strengthens bilateral ties with the United States and European nations, which could facilitate broader cooperation in economic, technological and defense areas. Membership could also provide access to advanced military technology, share intelligence and conduct joint training exercises.
