An Argentine military enclave in Tierra del Fuego rekindles border tension with Chile

He Government of Chile sent a letter to Argentine Foreign Ministry warning that military installations located in the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands would violate their territorial integrity, since they would cross 3 meters of the established border limits.

Its about “Maritime Traffic Surveillance and Control Post Milestone 1”, belonging to the Argentine Navy, which was assembled thanks to donations from different private companies. The enclave is located in “Landmark 1”, which separates both countries.

The work was carried out in conjunction with the Mirgor Foundation, the company Total Energies and its partners Wintershall Dea and Panamerican Energy. It has two housing modules to be used as an Operations Center and as a room for the personnel who carry out surveillance and control of maritime traffic.

However, in its assembly, the facilities would have passed by three meters of the line that delimits the border with Chile. This caused the authorities of the neighboring Nation to take action on the matter and send a letter to the Argentine Foreign Ministry, in charge of Diana Mondinowarning about the situation.

In dialogue with the Chilean media radio Bío Bío, the Argentine ambassador in Santiago, Jorge Faurie, recognized errors in construction. ““It was a material error because the person who installed the solar panels is a company that donated those panels, which was guided by a fence from a room in the area,” said the diplomat.

In this regard, Faurie maintained that the Navy “should have been guided by the satellite coordinates that demarcate boundaries” and said that “it would not be possible to move the panels at this time” and that “we would have to wait until summer.”

The enclave is located in “Landmark 1”, which separates both countries.

However, he assured that they are maintaining dialogue with the Chilean authorities and that they are considering another alternative: “That those panels that are electricity providers2 could also supply the Chilean side, which would be useful for the garrison they have there.”

On the other hand, he asked not to magnify the fact, since “it is not such an impressive work, it is some solar panels placed but they did not check carefully what the coordinates that marked the limit were.”
