The City Council of Córdoba wants to repeat the success and follow the itinerary of large exhibitions such asChange of era: Cordova and the Christian Mediterraneanthrough which some 350,000 people between December 2022 and March 2023. In fact, the municipal government is already working on organizing a large exhibition on ancient Egypt that could see the light of day at the end of 2025. «We want to continue with the itinerary of great cultural exhibitions. We started it in the previous mandate with Córdoba and the Christian Mediterranean and we are already working on the next major exhibition that will be at the end of 2025,” José María Bellido explained to CÓRDOBA.

The exhibition about Christianity

The exhibition on Christianity was an ambitious initiative that wanted to follow in the footsteps of the mythical exhibition on The splendor of the Umayyads, which delved into the role played by the city in the expansion of Christianity during the 4th to 6th centuries. He did it through 200 pieces coming from local, national and international museums that could be seen, following a themed route, in three exhibition venues in the capital of Córdoba: the Center for Contemporary Creation of Andalusia C3A, the Mosque-Cathedral and the room Vimcorsto.

Then the pieces arrived from prestigious rooms in Europe and Tunisia such as the Vatican Museums, the National Museum of Carthage in Tunisia, the National Museum of Rome, the National Museum of Archeology in Lisbon, that of Florence and Venice, Arles, the Archaeological Museum National and the Archaeological Museum of Córdoba itself.

The path to more exhibitions

At the closing of what was one of the great municipal bets in the exhibition field of José María Bellido’s first term – it involved an investment of around 1.6 million euros – the mayor already assured that “the great impact » of the sample opened “the way to carry out new ambitious exhibitions in the future.” That has been, in fact, the guiding banner of this exhibition that has begun to be organized around Egypt.

However, the African country was not the first option that the municipal government considered to make a new exhibition. «Córdoba has a role in history closely related with Muslim culture and Jewish culture and with those civilizations, but right now the international impact of any exhibition that we make about it, I think it could be conflictive in one sense or another and I think it would move the focus away from culture and bring it closer to other frameworks of international politics and war that, frankly, does not interest us in Córdoba nor do I think that anyone wants us to focus on the top,” explains the mayor.

This reflection on the international context has changed the theme of the exhibition that the Córdoba City Council will organize, but has kept the objective intact: «We are going to continue with these great exhibitions and we are already preparing that great exhibition, in this case focused on the Egyptian art,” the councilor concludes.
