When will the new Chilean digital identity card be delivered and what will happen to the old documents

On June 5, the Civil Registry and Identification Service of Chile presented the new digital identity card, the national identity document (DNI) that certifies the identity of Chilean citizens. The renewal also includes passports, which will have a new format.

The document will allow you to have a physical card – the traditional plastic card – and a version that will be available in a mobile phone application. This change – the most important of the service in its 140-year history – will involve the reinforcement of the security systems and the application of measures that will ensure inclusivity.

The new Chilean ID and passport

The design of the new physical identity document consists of a transparent copihue in the upper right part, a huemul and a condor in the lower part, with the majestic Andes mountain range in the background. Added to this is a QR code, the black and white photograph, and the fingerprint of the citizen carrying the ID. The new passport will be turquoise blue, like the Chilean flag, and will have space for 48 pages. In each movement a map of the Chilean territory will be visible.

The digital version

Chileans will also be able to access a version of the digital identity card, which will be available in a special application. With it, various procedures can be carried out in public and private services. The platform will be launched with the implementation of the new card.

Security measures

The renewed Chilean card will have at least 32 security measures to prevent falsification, including non-standard typography, a laser-engraved photograph and data, tactile relief, variable line width, chip and a gradient background, among others. Some of these elements are visible using a magnifying glass and or a UV lamp.

From when will it be delivered

The Civil Registry has reported that the new identity card will be delivered starting in December of this year, when the technological systems that will complement it are activated.

What will happen to the current IDs?

Documents currently in force and obtained before December 13, 2024 will remain valid. People will have to wait for the expiration date of their document to request its renewal.

The price of the card

The new identity card and the renewed passport do not yet have a defined price. The value of the documents will be informed by the Ministry of Justice, the Government portfolio in charge of managing the Civil Registry. Currently, the renewal of the license costs 3,820 pesos (about 4 dollars). The cost of the passport depends on its size, since the 32-page one costs 69,660 pesos (75 dollars), while the 64-page one costs 69,740 pesos (76 dollars).

How documents are renewed

The process to obtain a Chilean identity card is in person and is carried out at any branch of the Civil Registry Service in Chile. To do this, you can reserve a time through the organization’s official website. There is also a digital method to renew the document and preserve all current data. This procedure is also available on the official platform of the public entity and has, among its requirements, having a Unique Code, a password that is provided to carry out numerous procedures online.
