In the midst of one of the worst crises it has faced in recent years, as a result of the revelation of different chats of members of the Supreme Court and appeal courts, the highest court decided to suspend the hearing of all cases for next Wednesday 19, in order to hold a plenary session, in which the consequences of the revelations of the chats between the former judge of the Courts of Appeals of Santiago and Copiapó, Juan Antonio Poblete, with Minister Mario Carroza, as well as as with the former Defense Ministers Mario Desbordes and Alberto Espina (current advisor of the State Defense Council), by appointments, both of magistrates of the same highest court, and of notaries.
“Lawyers, attorneys and the general public are informed that on Wednesday, June 19, the chambers of this Supreme Court will not function, because an extraordinary plenary session will be held,” says the statement issued by the court. which is found on their website.
The Investigative Police (PDI) has reviewed thousands of messages from Juan Antonio Poblete, which were released by Ciperchile. This medium reported that Poblete, who is currently in preventive detention for the espionage carried out by the Army Intelligence Directorate (DINE) against the journalist Mauricio Weibel, asked Desbordes for help, so that magistrate María Teresa Letelier could reach the Supreme Court. The above meant the beginning of an investigation by the Public Ministry and the presentation of a complaint by the National Institute of Human Rights against the former Secretary of State.
In addition, the same medium announced that the Metropolitan Anti-Corruption Brigade detected a 2020 chat between the former judge and the then Minister of Defense of the Piñera government, Alberto Espina, revealing efforts by Poblete, aimed at speeding up a ruling related to the Army.
Other messages that were revealed were those sent by Judge Mario Carroza to Poblete, asking for help in applying for a notary in Tierra Amarilla, as well as the request from former Supreme Court Lamberto Cisternas, who asked for help for the same thing, although in that case the The application was to a notary office in Lo Barnechea and the applicant was the wife of Eugenio “Pingüino” González, a well-known court operator. Likewise, there are chats between Poblete and the notary Francisco Leiva, brother of PS deputy Raúl Leiva, who even leaked the removal notebook that was being followed against him.
The paralysis of functions shows concern within the highest court. As a result of this, a first plenary session was held last Monday and a second session this Friday. According to The Mercury, during the first day some ministers kept their phones in drawers. That same day, in addition, Minister Letelier told her peers that none of us had been appointed “by the work and grace of the holy spirit,” after some magistrates asked to convene the ethics commission.
In the instance, the president of the Supreme Court, Ricardo Blanco, proposed resuming the debate on reform of the appointment system of the Judiciary and also its qualifications.
In addition, Minister Blanco reported a meeting with the national prosecutor, Ángel Valencia, after the plenary session ordered him on Monday to express “his concern” to the head of the Public Ministry.
