MMore than 91,500 people have benefited from access to drinking water in La Guajira. In addition, 162 communities have rehabilitation projects, 560 drinking water infrastructures have been contracted and 62 completed.

The Minister of Housing, Catalina Velasco, He highlighted that more than 21,000 million pesos have been invested in these initiatives by the National Government in recent years.

Added to this is the opening of the international public competition for the structuring of the definitive solution for the supply of drinking water for one million people who live in La Guajira.

This process will allow the technical, economic, legal, financial, environmental, property and social structuring for the conduction of water from the El Cercado del Río Ranchería reservoir to the middle and upper Guajira. It will also establish the desalination plants required by the project.

“The most important thing for bring water to La Guajira is to have a structural solution and that is the purpose of this merit contest,” commented Minister Catalina Velasco.

This process has a budget of 28,851 million pesos and it is expected to be awarded on July 30. It is estimated that the works that are defined will have an investment of 2.3 billion pesos and will be developed over a period of six years.

These were some of the advances that the Minister of Housing presented in the framework of the session of the Constitutional Court to follow up on a ruling issued in 2017.

In this ruling, the state of affairs was declared unconstitutional regarding the special protection of the rights to water, health and food for the Wayúu indigenous communities of the municipalities of Riohacha, Manaure, Uribia and Maicao. He also established a series of State commitments to overcome this situation.

With respect to what was stated by the Minister of Housing, Jairo Alfonso Aguilar Deluque valued the effort that is being made “by having the possibility of having one of our historical problems resolved, which is the access to drinking water“.
