Who was General Manuel Eduardo Arias?
Manuel Eduardo Arias, born in Humahuaca, is a historical figure of great importance for Jujuy and the nation. His military career began at an early age when he joined the revolutionary forces, where he quickly rose through the ranks thanks to his bravery and skill on the battlefield.
During the war of independence, Jujuy was a scene of constant attacks by royalist forces from Upper Peru.. In this context, the Jujuy troops under the command of Arias and Martín Miguel de Güemes played a vital role in the defense of the region and the newly achieved independence.
The victories obtained by Arias and his Jujuy soldiers were decisive, earning him the rank of Colonel. However, his career was interrupted when he was exiled to Tucumán. Despite his return to Jujuy, political conflicts with Governor José Ignacio Gorriti and a failed attempt to invade Salta to achieve political autonomy led to his tragic assassination in 1822.
In recognition of his brave service and sacrifice, in 2016 he was granted postmortem promotion to general of the Nation, and his name was assigned to several important sites in the province.
The gaucho associations of Jujuy, fundamental pillars of local tradition and culture, play an essential role in the preservation of gaucho customs. They organize numerous events throughout the year, keeping alive the legacy of historical figures like Arias. The celebration of Jujeño Gaucho Day not only honors Arias, but also recognizes the gaucho spirit and identity that endures in the province.

Thus, every June 16, the people of Jujuy remember Manuel Eduardo Arias and his contribution to the independence of Argentina, reaffirming pride in his heritage and the history of his province.
