Last Wednesday, the Buenos Aires Legislature paid tribute to the volunteer firefighters of the province of Buenos Aires titled “Heroism of cities.”
The event was promoted by the legislator of the Libertad Avanza block in the Buenos Aires Legislature, Lucía Montenegro.
The speakers were, among others, Daniel Vicente (president of the Buenos Aires Federation of Firefighters Associations) and Osvaldo Lori (president of the Federation of Firefighters of the Province of Buenos Aires).
“A few years ago, my father was talking with one of those present at this event, Sebastián De Philippis, and I remember that the topic was volunteer firefighters. In that context I asked De Philippis if firefighters should not receive a salary. And his response was categorical, ‘better not, we would not want this task to become a job opportunity, because the vocation to do what we do out of passion could be lost,'” said Monetenegro and added: “I was surprised and moved by that full response. of immense love.”
The honored firefighters, for their part, expressed their gratitude for the recognition: “We carry out our ad honorem work with pride and vocation. There are many of us who embrace this profession, knowing that we are often not taken into account until the pain of others calls us. Therefore, this gesture implies a caress to the heart, which is the engine that drives us day after day.”
