The General Maritime Directorate, Dimar, has reported the presence of a large low pressure system known as the “Central American Gyre”, which is causing intense rains and increased wind and waves in much of the Colombian Caribbean.

This phenomenon, the result of the interaction between the Monsoon Trough, the Azores high pressure system, the Darien low pressure system and a tropical wave in the Caribbean Sea, is expected to have a significant influence over the next two days.

Dimar predicts that, in the next 48 hours, the Central American Gyre will produce strong winds of between 15 and 20 knots, generating waves 1.5 to 2.0 meters high.

Given this situation, Dimar suggests taking extreme security measures in maritime activities.

In parallel, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) has warned about the passage of tropical waves #6 and #7, which will cause intense rains during the weekend, affecting regions of the Caribbean, Pacific, Orinoquía and Amazonia. .

These adverse climatic conditions could affect both the island and coastal areas of the departments of Sucre, Córdoba and Bolívar, Atlántico, Magdalena and La Guajira.

In addition, an increase in precipitation is anticipated in the maritime and coastal areas of Bolívar, Atlántico, Magdalena, La Guajira and the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

Yesterday, Saturday, June 15, there was an increase in cloudiness and the intensity of rain, especially in the regions in the Caribbean maritime zone. Thunderstorms with heavier rains are expected for the afternoon and evening in several departments, including La Guajira, Magdalena, Cesar, Córdoba, Bolívar, Sucre, Chocó, Antioquia, Santander, Norte de Santander, Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Caldas, Risaralda, Quindío, Meta, Vichada, Guainía, Vaupés, Guaviare, Caquetá and Amazonas. In the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, cloudy skies are forecast with a probability of rain.

TODAY SUNDAY

For Sunday, June 16, rains with electrical activity will continue in areas in specific parts of the Caribbean and Andean regions. Intense rainfall is expected in sectors of La Guajira, Magdalena, Atlántico, Cesar, Bolívar, Cauca, Nariño, Antioquia, Santander and Norte de Santander.

Ideam recommends that the population stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas and check the condition of elevated structures in the event of strong winds. In addition, it is suggested to permanently monitor weather conditions and seek refuge in safe areas in case of heavy rains.

What is the ‘Central American Giro’?

It refers to an atmospheric circulation system that affects the Central American region. This system can influence weather patterns, causing variations in weather conditions such as heavy rain, storms, and strong winds.

The gyre can be a determining factor in the formation of extreme weather phenomena, affecting both the daily weather and the planning and response to climatic events in the region and adjacent subregions, in this case, Colombia and part of South America.

What is the ‘Monsoon Trough’?

It is an area of low atmospheric pressure that forms in tropical regions, particularly influenced by the pattern of monsoon winds. This trough is characterized by the convergence of winds from different directions, which causes high convective activity, generating intense rains and storms.

What happens when these two atmospheric systems collide?

The combination of these phenomena can intensify the formation of torrential rains, severe storms and strong winds. This increases the risk of floods, landslides and other natural disasters. The interaction between both systems amplifies atmospheric instability, which can prolong bad weather and significantly affect human and economic activities in the affected area. It is essential to monitor this combination to implement appropriate preventive and response measures.
