He chased and beat a homeless man to death; now he’s going to jail

A 28-year-old man who is being investigated for co-authorship of the homicide of Orlando Gregorio Oliva, committed in the city of Santa Fe, was remanded in preventive detention. This was ordered by the judge of the Preparatory Criminal Investigation (IPP), Pablo Spekuljak, in a hearing held in the courts of the provincial capital.

Prosecutor Estanislao Giavedoni is in charge of the investigation and is the one who requested the deprivation of liberty of the accused, whose initials are LAQ. In this sense, the MPA official indicated that “based on a previous agreement, the Defense did not propose alternative measures.”

“At the hearing we presented all the evidence collected so far,” said the prosecutor and assessed that “the judge considered that it was sufficient to prove, with the degree of probability necessary at this stage of the criminal process, the materiality of the fact and the possible authorship by the accused.”

In turn, the MPA official said that “the magistrate considered that the expected penalty provided for by the attributed crime is effective compliance” and considered that “the procedural risks were latent.” In relation to this, he stated that “it was taken into account that he still needs to carry out investigative procedures to clarify what happened,” and mentioned that “another man who participated in the homicide has not yet been identified.”

Giavedoni explained that “the illicit act was committed during the last minutes of Thursday, February 22 of this year on the public road of the provincial capital, in the vicinity of 2,800 25 de Mayo Street.” He specified that “from a bar located at Hipólito Irigoyen at 2,400, the accused chased and attacked the victim, who was homeless,” and added that “to carry out the criminal conduct, he acted jointly with the man who “He is a fugitive.”

According to him, “the attackers violently approached Oliva because they believed that he had left the restaurant, where the accused worked, without paying.” In this regard, he remarked that “the way they chose to resolve the interpersonal conflict was absolutely disproportionate.”

“As a result of the beating, the attacked man suffered significant injuries,” said the prosecutor. “During the early hours of the next day, he was found by police officers who contacted 107 and arranged for his transfer to the Dr. José María Cullen hospital,” he said. “Oliva remained hospitalized there until Friday, March 1, when he died,” he specified.

Detention at the bar

The MPA representative stated that “from the moment the homicide was committed, we carried out different investigative tasks in order to locate the co-authors.”

“Among other measures, security camera records and social media profiles were analyzed; medical, police and municipal reports were collected, and a homeless person who witnessed the attack and those close to the victim was interviewed as witnesses,” Giavedoni listed.
