Javier Milei found his place in the world: the small Free Republic of Liberty. It is a landlocked European micronation located on the Balkan Peninsula, on the western bank of the Danube River on the border between Croatia and Serbia, but neither of them considers it their own.

Liberland was proclaimed Independent on April 13, 2015 by Vít Jedlika. The lack of institutional recognition is a problem for the institutional official of the little country. Only North Sudan did it, an African territory that emerged after a civil war that also does not have the support of its peers.

According to information published on the country’s official website created by the president himself, Liberland may have been created due to the Serbo-Croatian territorial dispute. Serbs directly consider the issue as something minor and claim that it has no effect on the country’s interests.

Croatia, for its part, is the one that currently administers the territory, and has stated that after international arbitration it should be ceded only to Croatia or Serbia. Indeed, Libertad is an empty place left by the breakup of Yugoslavia in the late 2000s.

In February 2019, Milei disguised himself as General Ancap and claimed to be an anarcho-capitalist superhero who comes from Liberland.

In that territorial void that apparently interests no one, Vito Jedlicka founded a liberal paradise without a State where paying taxes is voluntary but with the peculiarity that it does not have any inhabitants. Jedlicka leads the Free Citizens Party in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic and on April 13, 2015, he founded the self-proclaimed libertarian micronation.

In any case, according to Diario con Vos, Liberland has already granted 1,000 citizenships and has 900,000 requests.

Citizens pay a membership in a cryptocurrency called Merit. The more merits are given, the more chances there are to create businesses in the country. El Mérito is the country’s official currency and is on par with the dollar, although they also support bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum.

How does Liberland appear on Argentina’s radar? In February 2019, an unknown Javier Milei dressed up as General Ancap and claimed to be an anarcho-capitalist superhero who comes from Liberland.

It is evident that the President already knew about the experience. The economist Nicolás Mateos is another link. Liberland’s “ambassador” in Argentina told Perfil that he knew of its existence in 2017.

Last year, at a Bitcoin conference in Argentina Mateos arranged a chance meeting between Jedlicka and Diana Mondino before the runoff with Sergio Massa.

“Vit had been invited so we met Diana in person and then we had a private chat. A president can recognise a country by decree or diplomatic relations can be established with the Foreign Ministry. That is what we are trying to do. But we understand that the government’s priorities are different because Argentina has to recover,” Mateos told Perfil.

The tour of the Czech Republic was an opportunity to formalize the bond but it did not happen. The micronation must wait for the moment for the first anarcho-capitalist president to bless the country he would have liked to found.
