In the municipality of Yarumal, Antioquia, the murder of a 33-year-old woman was confirmed. The victim was heading towards her workplace, but was scolded by her former partner, according to local authorities.

According to the Yarumal community, the man attacked the woman, identified as Johana Andrea Ortiz Ayala, with a sharp weapon, after having a heated discussion for several minutes.

Reports from the authorities indicated that the woman managed to be helped by some residents of the area, and was later rushed to the hospital, where she died due to the severity of her injuries.

The Mayor’s Office of Yarumal, through a statement, rejected the violent event, which is why they invited the community to work to eliminate gender violence.

From the municipal administration ‘Yarumal Nos Une’ we will continue working on the protection of women’s rights so that effective measures are implemented that allow preventing future acts of violence,” stated the Yarumal Mayor’s Office.

On the other hand, in the El Cucaracho sector of the 7 Robledo commune of Medellín, the authorities arrested a 57-year-old man, accused of murdering Nancy Castaño.

The capture of the accused was recorded after the agencies in charge managed to identify the body of the victim, who was decapitated and whose remains showed signs of violence, In addition, they were in a state of decomposition.

The victim, 36 years old, was last seen in the house of the accused, located in the Castilla neighborhood of the capital of Antioquia, on February 18, 2023. Later, in March of the same year, the agencies in charge found the lifeless body of a woman in a ravine near the suspect’s home.

Due to the condition of the body, the identification of the remains took several months. However, after complaints from relatives, Lieutenant Colonel César Mauricio Rodríguez Zárate, Operational Commander of the Metropolitan Police of the Aburrá Valley, confirmed that “a body of a woman was identified in June of last year in a ravine of the commune 7 Robledo”, which would correspond to that of Nancy Castaño.

So far in 2024, Colombia has been the scene of an alarming increase in femicides. The Attorney General of the Nation, Margarita Cabello, reported that 90 cases have been registered, 61 of these perpetrated by partners or ex-partners of the victims. An additional and worrying fact is that, in 39 of these cases, the weapon used was a knife.

As Cabello explained, “18 women per month this year have been allegedly murdered by their romantic partners or ex-partners, which means that Four women have died a week due to problems related to family life. This cannot continue to happen.”
