The orcas have been enjoying the coast of Río Negro for more than nine days. 15 individuals from the Valdés Peninsula, Chubut, have already been counted. They move in various family groups, hunting and playing along the Coastal Path. La Lobería and Bahía Rosas are the key points to observe them, although it is not at all easy or sometimes it is.

«There was a surf show on the beaches of Bahía Rosas, Río Negro. Orcas enjoy surfing waves, and they do it often. Konke, her two calves, Valen, Solei and Shekei put on the show,” explained Peninsula Valdes Orca Research (PVOR), an NGO based in Peninsula Valdés that studies the orca population through photo identification.

Between the natural area of ​​Punta Bermeja (La Lobería) and Bahía Rosas, a total of 15 orcas were observed. during the nine days. The presence of eight of the cataloged orcas was confirmed: Pao, Shekei, Konke, Nova and Konke’s new calf (5), Valen’s group (Valen, Solei and Emyr), and the presence of the matriarch Maga was also recorded with his group (7).

Where to observe the orcas on the coast of Río Negro


Observing them is not easy at all or maybe it is. It depends on the time, the sea conditions and of course, if the orcas decide to pass by the place.

To increase the chances, It is ideal to go to observation points such as the Punta Bermeja viewpoints, which are located about 60 kilometers from Viedma, along Provincial Route N°1.

It is open every day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free access. Visitors are recommended to bring binoculars for better observation and remember that pets are not allowed in the area.

Also to Bahía Rosas is a good idea, although it is recommended to bring everything taking into account that there are no services. It is located about 15 kilometers south of La Lobería, also along Provincial Route No. 1 and it is recommended to check the status of the road.
