Government of Atlántico will build a modern sports center in Santo Tomás

What stands out is that the spaces for the different sports disciplines were defined by the community itself.

The project will become a reality in the traditional Peldar field, located in the north of the municipality.

Santo Tomás, Atlántico, June 16, 2024. The desire of many residents of Santo Tomás to encourage the practice of sports such as football, skating, basketball, among others, in a modern multi-sports setting, will become a reality from the materialization of the project that was socialized on the Peldar field, in the Buena Esperanza neighborhood, north of the municipality, by Governor Eduardo Verano, the director of Indeportes Atlántico, Iván Urquijo and the mayor of the municipality, Paula Hun.

In the midst of an atmosphere of joy, animated by children from the Álex Acosta and Fernel Díaz Soccer School, Governor Verano highlighted the advantages of the megaproject on the traditional sand field where local athletes have been trained, especially in soccer.

“It is a sports center that will have a field with all FIFA measurements; and we want us to also have the opportunity for a skating rink because that’s what the community voted they wanted in this space. There are other ideas from other soccer fields, we have to look for spaces, but this is the one we are going to intervene in immediately,” the president highlighted.

The director of Indeportes Atlántico, Iván Urquijo, provided details of the designs that will be executed in a total area of 31,034 square meters.

“We are very happy with the governor to be able to socialize this great three-hectare project. Different sports disciplines will be developed here such as soccer, skating, a multiple coliseum, which will have practices such as basketball, volleyball and futsal,” the official noted.

He also stated that the intention is to integrate families, through the adaptation of green spaces and areas, pedestrian areas, cycle paths, bio-healthy gym and recreation places.

“We want to integrate everyone based on sports and create sports centers, recreational sports for the community,” said Urquijo.

Speaking on behalf of the community was the Sports Coordinator of the Mayor’s Office of Santo Tomás, Uldarico Acosta Berdugo, who thanked Governor Eduardo Verano for fulfilling a dream that the Tomasinos have had for years regarding the Peldar field.

“This administration is determined that we have many sports venues, because Santo Tomás is a sports municipality. You see it, Mr. Governor, reflected today on this field, all the children who are practicing,” Acosta stressed.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Governor Verano and the director of Indeportes Atlántico highlighted that the scenario will adjust to the requests made by the community during the socialization of the project.

For example, in the consultation about the sports discipline they wanted to practice, 33.34% expressed their interest in a soccer field, because the existing ones in the municipality, such as the stadium
Gabriel Acuesta and the Centenario field are not suitable for sports practice due to their deterioration.

With a percentage of 22.23%, the community requested an athletics track to strengthen the development of this sport in the population, and thus put aside the use of the municipality’s multiple fields and traffic routes for this purpose.

21.22% of the participants expressed their desire for a skating rink, taking into account the sporting reality of several clubs that practice this sport in the municipality.

Other indicators taken into account are related to 9.9% for the discipline of basketball and 8.8% for volleyball because they consider that it is essential to have a space that allows strengthening the sports development that these sports have today in the municipality.
