Deaths from road accidents in the department of Córdoba registered a worrying increase of 5.8% during the first four months of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year.
According to data from the National Road Safety Observatory, between January and April of this year there were 92 deaths in traffic accidents in the department, while in 2023 87 fatalities were recorded.
An alarming trend that stands out in these figures is that motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable road users. Of the total number of deaths in road accidents in Córdoba during the first four months of 2024, 77%, that is, 71 people, were drivers or passengers of motorcycles.
Major Elkin Gustavo Morantes Ortiz, Sectional Chief of Transit and Transportation of Córdoba, expressed his concern regarding this panorama: “The road actor that is causing the most accidents in the entire department is the motorcyclist. To date, we have a 13% reduction in deaths in traffic accidents compared to the previous year, but it is not enough. All the activities we carry out are aimed at preventing accidents among motorcyclists, that vulnerable road actor who unfortunately sets the accident rates.”.
The department’s traffic authorities have identified that excessive speed and the lack of skill of some drivers are the main causes of these accidents. In response to this situation, awareness campaigns and road controls have been intensified, especially in corridors identified as critical, such as the road axis that leads from Caucasia to Planeta Rica.
From the Traffic and Transportation Section of Córdoba, a call is made to all road actors, especially motorcyclists, to respect the traffic rules, do not exceed speed limits, check the technical-mechanical conditions of your vehicles and, above all, do not drive under the influence of alcohol.
