Ports of the Tarapacá Region move 32.2% less cargo in April 2024

He port sector of the Tarapacá Region set a fourth month of negative performance in the year, this after evidencing a decrease of 32.2% in the total cargo movement compared to April 2023, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In April 2024, 733,891 tons of cargo were moved through the regional port system. In this way, 3,454,667 tons were treated in the time frame, which implied a contraction of 25.1% in the same period of months last year.

The activity linked to exports recorded the highest incidence of the period, since its dynamism showed a decrease of 41.1% in twelve months. While, imports decreased 17.8% in the annual variation analysis.

The third influence corresponded to cabotagewhich increased its activity by 41.9% compared to the same month of the previous one, the cargo moved by transit to third parties rose 13.5% in twelve months and activity related to re-stuffing exhibited a positive interannual variation of 22%.

Boarding and unloading

Tasks linked to the loading and unloading of material moved 716,506 tons, evidencing a decrease of 32.9% in twelve months. The accumulated cargo until the fourth month of the year showed a decline of 25.8% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 3,377,750 tons.

On the one hand, the activity linked to exports moved 508,325 tons, which translated into a decrease of 41.1% in twelve months. Meanwhile, the dynamism of imports moved 88,861 tons, being 17.8% less compared to the same month of the previous year.

On the contrary, cabotage moved 46,540 tons, showing an increase of 41.9% in twelve months, while third-party transit movement moved 72,780 tons, which was 13.5% more in twelve months.

Handling services

The cargo moved by the handling services totaled 17,385 tons, growing 21.8% in twelve months, accumulating 76,917 tons, which denotes an increase of 28.1% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Within these services, it was observed that re-stacking activity presented an increase of 22% in twelve months, reaching a total of 17,385 tons. Meanwhile, the transshipment service did not register cargo movement.

In April 2024, bulk cargo moved totaled 506,422 tons, which meant a decrease of 40.4% in twelve months. Meanwhile, the accumulated variation showed a decrease of 30.5% compared to the same period last year.

In relation to the movement of other types of cargo, activity in the region’s ports decreased 2% in twelve months, totaling 227,470 tons.
