WHAT WAS THE CRIME OF THE RIOJANO TRUCK DRIVER?

Last Friday, February 9, Federico Orihuela, a truck driver from Chepes, La Rioja, who came to San Juan during the Safari in Valle Fértil, was shot when he tried to flee from the police while he was being taken to the police station. After a chase, Orihuela received several bullet wounds that came from the weapon of the sub-inspector officer Ricardo Rodríguez.

Orihuela’s tragic itinerary began when some police officers, assigned to the police operation for the Safari rally after the Sierras, asked him to remove his truck from the place where he had parked it and, in the process, demanded documentation. When they noticed that he was not in order – they explained – they called the police station and asked him to go with a truck and everything to that police headquarters. But on the way he turned aside and accelerated, apparently with the intention of leaving, perhaps to his house in Chepes, La Rioja.

According to investigators, in the first stretches of the chase, two police officers on motorcycles from the GAM Group passed him and went ahead to alert other drivers traveling in the opposite direction about the danger. Behind the truck driver were the police station cell phone with Rodríguez, the driver and a police officer, another patrol car and an Environment truck.

The man died after being shot and the judicial process began to determine the responsibility of the San Juan police officer.
