Minutes before midnight on Friday, May 3, a series of minor traffic accidents had occurred in the South Access at Sarmiento Street. Road Police personnel and road agents from the Municipality of Godoy Cruz were directing traffic to the east side, since there were several vehicles that collided and, in addition, the light was missing. because several weeks ago thieves stole the cables from the place.

At that moment A Ford EcoSport truck passed through the area at excess speed, entered the shoulder and ended up running over police officer Leonardo Alarcón and preventer Santiago Velázquez. The latter ended up losing his life at the scene, while the man was taken to the Central Hospital where he was admitted with serious injuries – including an amputated leg – and died hours later.

The driver of the vehicle, Hugo Martínez, was almost lynched by those present. They performed a blood test that showed 2.68 grams of alcohol, that is, more than five times the maximum 0.5 allowed by the Traffic Law.
