With the arrival of the coldest season of the year, we will also have the longest night and the shortest day with sunlight.

Despite the intense frontal systems that the country has experienced in recent days, we are still in autumn. Because of this, it is necessary to ask ourselves: When does winter start in Chile?

The astronomical event of Winter solstice begins the coldest time of the year. This occurs annually when one of the Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sunwhich means that it follows its lowest path in the sky and daylight is minimal.

According to Arturo Gómez, an astrophotographer from Cerro Tololo, in the Coquimbo Region, “on this date, we will have the longest night of darkness and the shortest day with sunlight.”

This phenomenon will occur this Thursday, June 20 at 4:50 p.m. and at 5:51 p.m. in the Magallanes Region.

Likewise, the winter solstice coincides with the celebration of We Tripantu, also known as the Mapuche new year, which represents a moment of rebirth for many indigenous cultures.

Specifically, the Wiñon Antu, We Tripapanantu or Wüñoy Tripantu, celebrates the arrival of winter with various rituals, traditions and ancestral foods.

Along with this, the winter solstice marks the celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Chile, a day that is commemorated with a national holiday.
