The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), through a statement, has pointed out a worrying number of emergency events and disasters throughout Colombian territory during the current rainy season. According to the latest report issued by relief agencies, more than 700 events have been documented since the start of the season.

In the department of Magdalena, specifically, a total of 16 events have been reported, highlighting strong floods and landslides that have affected areas of Santa Marta, Zona Bananera, Plato, Ariguaní and El Banco. These incidents have generated considerable concern among authorities.

Simultaneously, the Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (IDEAM) has issued a series of preventive measures due to increased rainfall and the possible occurrence of adverse meteorological phenomena such as thunderstorms and landslides. These measures have the main objective of protecting the safety and well-being of the population against these natural events.

It is crucial to quickly inform local authorities about cracks or inclinations in infrastructure, know and have prepared evacuation routes and meeting points in case of emergency, adequately secure roofs and objects susceptible to being blown away by intense winds, review the state of structures elevated areas that can collapse and properly dispose of waste to avoid sewer blockages, and take extra precautions if you live in flood-prone areas.

It is crucial that the population pay attention to the recommendations issued by the National Risk Management System and IDEAM, as well as updated alerts and forecasts, to mitigate the impact of these natural events and guarantee community safety.

This report highlights the importance of preparation and early response to emergency situations, as well as coordination between government entities and the community to effectively face the challenges derived from adverse weather conditions.
