Within the framework of Pride Month, the Institute of Labor Safety (ISL) of the Valparaíso region, together with the Seremi de la Mujer y Equidad de Género, held a meeting with organizations and institutions of sexual diversity to discuss their experiences regarding health and safety at work.

To complement the debate, a citizen consultation focused on occupational health and safety was carried out, which showed that 81% of those attending do not know the existence of Insurance against Work Accidents and Occupational Illnesses, the same percentage that answered that they have suffered violations at work due to their gender identity.

The Regional Director of the ISL, Maycol Gómez Vergara, positively valued this activity that allowed the current legislation on occupational health to be disseminated and the new legal incorporations, such as the Karin Law and ILO Convention 190. “As the Occupational Safety Institute, we value the activity because we believe that it is essential to be able to talk about mental health, about the inclusion of workers of sexual diversity,” he expressed.

The director of ISL Valparaíso also highlighted that the implementation of ILO Convention 190 “calls us to take preventive measures for these groups, which are much more vulnerable to situations of violence and harassment in the world of work.”

For her part, the Seremi of Women and Gender Equality of Valparaíso, Camila Lazo Molina, stated that “the importance of being able to meet with the organizations and institutions that work on these issues is precisely to know the experiences they have had in the world of work in matters of discrimination, workplace violence, but also in matters of good practices that have been developed in other institutions that can be replicated and also be able to generate intersectoral commitments to address them.”
