The exhibition will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the historic house located on the corner of Fray José de la Quintana and Salta, a few meters from Plaza 25 de Mayo. The meeting will mainly concentrate new collectors who have entered the activity since 2020. There will be metals and paper money not only from Argentina, but from continents as exotic as Asia and Africa.

The president of ASFINCO, Rolando Tesatolino, commented that the event aims to provide a space for collectors who began to collect each other’s materials and history in recent years. “During the strongest years of isolation due to the pandemic, between 2020 and 2021, many people found a hobby in collecting coins and banknotes. WhatsApp groups were formed and the materials that appeared are really very good,” he highlighted in an interview with Diario Period.

Testolino commented that the exhibition will be a space to “exchange experiences” and show society the rich historical and cultural heritage that is protected from numismatic experts to simple amateur neighbors. “To date, a group of ten exhibitors, in Corrientes and Chaco; They have already confirmed their participation. We hope that in the coming days more people will join, especially fans who usually do not have a place to exhibit,” he expressed.

Each of the stands will have an exhibitor willing to tell the stories hidden in each of these unique pieces. “For example, there will be banknotes from Africa and Asia, which will have particularities in their numbering,” he said.

Another of the condiments of the day will be the presentations by specialists. Carlos Micheli (from Corrientes) will talk about the first postal stamp of Corrientes and Argentina (see box). While Marcelo Gryckiewicz, from Buenos Aires, will present the conference “Kiau Chau, a little piece of Germany in the Chinese empire, coins and banknotes.”

It is worth remembering that last year, between April 23 and May 5, the numismatic and philatelist samples were resumed after seven years of hiatus. Recently, ASFINCO organized the exhibition “Numismatic Legacy of Italy: From the Reign to the Republic” that came to Casa Molinas within the framework of Italian Culture Week.

The first Argentine postal stamp was born in Corrientes

In 1843, Brazil adopted the postage stamp system as a pioneer in the region; while Chile did it a decade later. In those years, Argentina was not unified.

For this reason, Corrientes was the first province to put postage stamps on sale on August 21, 1856. These had the profile of “Ceres”, goddess of Roman agriculture, for being part of a land later considered the granary of the world.

The seal was the idea of the then governor of Corrientes, Juan Pujol, who entrusted the task to the French designer Matías Pipet. This first Argentine postal stamp was put on sale in the Corrientes Postal Administration of the time and remained valid until 1880. Throughout that period, less than ten issues were made for this reason.

In 1856, the State of Buenos Aires, which was separated from the Argentine Confederation, printed some postal stamps called “gauchitos” for values of four, six, eight and ten reales, but they were not put into circulation, since in July the Government adopted the peso as a new currency.

In 1953, in homage to the first Argentine postal stamp, August 21 was established as Argentine Philatelist Day. In 1956, on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the first Argentine stamp, the post office launched a commemorative stamp in tribute to Governor Pujol, promoter of postal stamps in our country.
