Areas affected by the intense drought in the municipalities of Cueto, Mayarí and Gibara, in the province of Holguín, benefit from new investments to contribute to the water supply in that territory, the third most densely populated in Cuba.
Juan Mario Echavarría Hernández, provincial delegate of Hydraulic Resources, told ACN that in these places new sources are being sought, work is being done on drilling wells and installing manual pumps, recovered from the movement of innovators.
He indicated that the supply is maintained through tank cars, in addition to the search for alternatives such as the creation of common reservoirs, among other strategies that facilitate access to the vital liquid for the greatest possible number of inhabitants.
In the case of the provincial capital, the investments include the elimination of exits and arrangements in the conductors, which increases the quality of the service, the manager emphasized.
At the same time, works such as the Caletones desalination plant, in the municipality of Gibara, and the Cueto water treatment plant are advancing, in addition to guarantees of supply to the tourist centers in El Ramón de Antilla, Pesquero and Guardalavaca, he said.
On the other hand, with the support of the United Nations Organization, rural and difficult-to-access areas are favored, with the installation of solar pumps and irrigation systems that benefit agriculture, and are integrated into the implementation of the Program for the Advancement of Women.
Holguín has more than 779 thousand clients associated with aqueduct and sewage systems, which represents 76 percent of its population and works such as the East-West Transfer and the Levisa Dam are also being promoted to promote agriculture in rural locations.
