The team of the Cardiology Department of the Carlos van Buren Hospital highlighted the achievements obtained by its scholarship recipients in the XXVI Annual Course on Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging of the Chilean Society of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, who were awarded two of the three awards. Doctors Alfonso Vargas and Nicolás Miño, cardiology fellows, obtained second and third place respectively in the clinical case competition, competing with nationally renowned institutions, both public and private.

Dr. Cecilia García B., head of Cardiology, He highlighted the importance of the active participation of the Cardiology Department in national courses, and emphasized the prestige of the Carlos van Buren Hospital in this type of events. “These awards fill us with pride, since they are clinical cases selected and prepared in our department, by the scholarship recipients and the members of our service”, the specialist stressed.

Training of specialists

Dr. Carlos Astudillo, Cardiologist at the Carlos Van Buren Hospital and professor of Cardiology at the University of Valparaíso, He explained that the award was based on the ability of the scholarship recipients to present interesting clinical cases, as well as the relevance and contributions of said cases to cardiology. He pointed out that the recognition obtained by the scholarship recipients reflects the prestige and preparation of local cardiology in the training of new cardiologists.

Dr. Alfonso Vargas, Cardiology Fellow at Valparaíso University, described a clinical case of a young patient with a sinus of Valsalva aneurysm that became complicated, but was finally resolved, which earned him second place, highlighting its rarity and complexity, as well as its educational value for the medical community. . He highlighted the fact that, despite having limited resources, the Carlos van Buren Hospital managed to stand out among institutions with greater resources.

For his part, the Dr. Nicolás Miño Espinoza, first-year scholarship recipient from the University of Valparaíso, shared details about the clinical case of a patient over 50 years old who was diagnosed with aortic coarctation 30 years ago, without images, but at that time he decided not to undergo surgery; however, after three decades, he returned again due to symptoms associated with the pathology. Therefore, he was diagnosed again and his pathology was resolved endovascularly, a work that earned him third place. The doctor stressed the importance of having managed to solve a patient’s pathology using limited resources, in contrast to cases presented by colleagues from institutions with greater technological resources.
