The socialist councilors Hurtado, Itxaso and San José leave their seats in the Basque Parliament

Moments before taking office as new advisors of the Government of Imanol Pradales within the socialist quota, Javier Hurtado (Tourism, Commerce and Consumption), Denis Itxaso (Housing and Urban Agenda) and María Jesús San José (Justice and Human Rights) have resigned to his seat in the Basque Parliament. For the moment, Estíbaliz Canto from Alava, former councilor in Vitoria and responsible for Festivals for years, and Adrián Fernández Rivas, former advisor to the Basque Government, former leader of the Socialist Youth of Madrid and “best speaker in Spain” have already joined the socialist bench. ” in 2020 for winning a college debate league. A third incorporation for Gipuzkoa remains to be finalized, something that will be done in the next few hours.

There is a fourth councilor with a seat, Nerea Melgosa (Wellbeing, Youth and Demographic Challenge), from the PNV side. Nationalist sources indicate that she has not yet tendered her resignation and is not expected to do so in the short term. The Euzkadi Buru Batzar (EBB), for its part, has authorized the appointment of two independent directors. They are Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias and Begoña Pedrosa, counselors of Science, Universities and Innovation and of Education, respectively. According to the party’s internal regulations, when a non-member is proposed for a national position of any rank, he must receive the approval of the leadership. This was done with an extraordinary EBB. There have been other councilors without a license before, such as Nekane Murga or Ángel Toña.

The new Pradales Government has more members than ever, sixteen in total including the Lehendakari. The Basque Parliament does not have physical space for all of them on the Executive bench. There are fourteen gaps, more than enough since 1991. This Tuesday, the Chamber Board analyzed this symbolic issue. The institution’s Maintenance team has already presented “several proposals” so that this issue can be resolved for the return of summer.

And it is not expected that there will be normal activity in the Chamber until September. This Friday the commissions will be established, which tend to be a mirror of the Government structure and whose presidencies are proportionally distributed between the Executive and opposition groups, but the first appearances and plenary sessions will not be held in July or August. When it comes to the control session with questions and interpellations to the Government, almost eight months will have passed since the last one, which was in February. In addition, the designation of the three seats in the Senate that correspond to the Basque Parliament is also postponed until after the holidays. Of course, it does not alter the majorities of the upper house since the same three senators will be ratified as now, Estefanía Beltrán de Heredia of the PNV, Idurre Bideguren of EH Bildu and Alfonso Gil of the PSE-EE.
