The Deliberative Council of Córdoba will approve in the session this Thursday a draft ordinance that extends the duration of the driver’s license to two years for people over 70 years of age. The initiative, presented by the radical councilor Juan Balastegui, was supported by all blocks of the legislative body.

The regulations in force in the city of Córdoba required people over 70 years of age to renew their driver’s license every year.

The new project modifies article 21 of ordinance 9,981 – Municipal Traffic Code – and establishes that the license for this age group will be valid for two years, “prior to completing the corresponding exams.”

And it adds that driver’s licenses issued prior to the entry into force will remain valid until the expiration of the period for which they were granted, “from which all the provisions relating to their granting, validity and content indicated” will govern. the new regulations.

The project is based on the claim of people over 70 years of age, who must face the financial burden and the annual license renewal process.

“This modification seeks to alleviate the economic burden that it represents for this age group since they will be able to extend the validity of their driver’s license for two years,” explained Councilor Balastegui.

“The project basically consists of increasing the validity of the driver’s license for people over 70 years of age, from one year that is currently to two years,” said Balastegui. “If the physical, psychophysical examination enables it, age should not be an inconvenience,” added the radical mayor.

The project was debated in the Council’s Public Services, Mobility and Transit Commission, where various specialists in health, gerontology, psychology and accidentology participated. Among them, the defender of the elderly of the City of Buenos Aires, Eugenio Semino; the gerontologist Carlos Presman; the director of the Padre Lamónaca Home, Arturo Lucchetta; and the Undersecretary of Hospital Care of the Municipality of Córdoba, Gustavo Peralta.

After several weeks of treatment and debate, he obtained support from all the blocks. The office was approved unanimously.

The president of the We Do for Córdoba bloc, Martín Simonian, highlighted that the Deliberative Council “is not an area of ideological disputes, but rather works to improve the lives of the neighbors, and stressed that all the ordinances that have been approved so far have had the support of opposition groups.

Councilor Balastegui asked the Executive to provide for free renewal of licenses for people over 70 years of age who are in a situation of economic vulnerability.
