Olokun: A spiritual album and a gift to the quena in Cuba (+Photos)

This is what both musicians considered in exclusive statements for Prensa Latina, after the presentation of the phonogram this Tuesday at the Meliá Cohíba hotel in this capital.

The result of the album of eight compositions exceeded the expectations of Fonseca, who assured that the songs are very spiritual, with a strong emotional charge and a lot of virtuosity.

I was inspired, above all, by folk music, both from Argentina and Cuba; At the same time, he wanted to link cultures and feel the importance of taking music as a universal language and the element to connect people, he said.

In his opinion, Olokun, from a spiritual point of view it is a blessing, and from a practical point of view a gift to the quena; This shows how far and much more that instrument can go, he concluded.

Recording this musical work took them around two years, Sosa explained, and it is like returning to the origins of the quena, to those rhythms and melodies that identify and define it, “with all the influence that I have as an Argentine living in Cuba.” ».

With Roberto’s great experience and way of composing, and Orestes Ávila’s mastery in recording engineering, responsible for uniting two artists to make music, as Roberto said, to break people’s hearts, in the good sense of the word, he added.

In his opinion, it is a very spiritual album because it connects us with everything that makes us feel and vibrate, “which is why the most delicate and beautiful way to close that sound world was to call it Olokun.”

It owes its name to the goddess of the depths of the sea in the Yoruba religion, and constitutes “a tribute to the faith of each person, to the way of moving forward thanks to the light of something.”

The cover image, he explained, was taken five meters deep on the coast of Reparto Náutico, in the Havana municipality of Playa, thanks to the team of Cuban freediver and world record holder Francisco “Pipín” Ferreras, who trained him to achieve that immersion. .

The album owes this maturity to a very great and deep music made by Fonseca, to a title that identifies them and a great cover, he said.

Olokun, available on all digital platforms, will feature an underwater video for the song and will also tour the country’s main theatres.

The Cuban public will be able to purchase it later in disc format. This is the result of collaborations between Producciones Colibrí, El Cerrito Records, and the Musical Recordings and Editions Company (Egrem).
