The inclined stairs on Calle 68b and Carrera 40 in the Malaba neighborhoodr are impassable for the elderly population that lives in that area of Manizales.
Those who go down and up them every day require a railing or handrail to be able to hold on and walk through them without fear of falling.
Cenelia Herrera Gómez She has her house in this area and, according to her, she sent a petition two months ago and until now they have not received a response. It is even signed by the neighbors.
“My daughter is 43 years old and suffers from osteoarthritis of the spine. He no longer has cartilage in his hips or knees and he has to climb with a staff. The woman who lives down the street from my house has a hip replacement and another neighbor has knee problems. The vast majority are adults. On one occasion they came and took measurements. They excited us about what they were going to fix and they ended up organizing other stairs,” Cenelia explained.
They analyze intervention
DENUNCIE visited the area and found that not only one staircase, but five more have the same problem with the handrails. In addition, some of them are covered with slats, which makes the movement of those who reside in this neighborhood of the University Commune more complicated.
Maria Herlinda Cifuentes, another resident, said that she has a sick sister and “she cannot raise her sclera because she has nowhere to lean on.”
Jorge Manuel García Montes, Secretary of Infrastructure of Manizales He stated: “We went to the site and found that they were newly built stairs. The intention is to be able to install the railings so that these people can move around. We are looking to see if we can do it this year with the resources we have from the different maintenance that we are developing, if not we would do it next year. “We are going to try to solve it in the best way and install railings on the stairs.”
