A donation of micronutrient powders (MNP) arrived at the ninth clinic of the Cosme Ordoñez Carceller teaching polyclinic, managed by the French ambassador to Cuba, Laurent Burin des Roziers, in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP).

Dr. Frankis Leonel Tirado Campos, deputy director of Medical Assistance, explained to Granma that the nutritional supplement, known as Chispitas para Crecer, is intended for children between six and 23 months of age, with the main objective of increasing the intake of micronutrients and reducing iron deficiency anemia in this age group.

For children between six and 11 months, sprinkles contain four micronutrients: vitamin A and C, iron and folic acid; and for infants between 12 and 23 months, they have the same content plus zinc. These components provide a balanced combination that contributes to healthy development, proper growth and strengthening of the immune system at an early age.

“In the polyclinic, there are currently 106 children consuming these nutrients, and so far no adverse reactions have been reported in relation to the supplement, which has generated an excellent reception in the community and among families,” said Tirado Campos.

With this donation and that of the other associated countries, the entire child population between six and 23 months will be reached.

Currently, WFP collaboration in Cuba has, as priority areas, resilient and sustainable local food systems; social protection; school feeding and nutrition, communication and education.
