The Economic Society of Friends of the Country, the oldest non-governmental organization in Cuba, promoted a debate on micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the national context.

With the participation of the Minister of Economy and Planning, Joaquín Alonso, the forum brought together this Thursday, officials, university professors, researchers in the field of exact sciences and humanities, businessmen and other entrepreneurs.

The starting point for the analysis was the presentations by the doctors of science Johana Odriozola, Juan Triana and Oscar Fernández, whose conceptual precisions and empirical evaluations left the audience with a host of questions that invite further public discussion.

According to the Economics and Science Section of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country, the meeting coincided with the celebration of June 27, the International Day of MSMEs, established in 2017 by the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization (UN).

Among the issues addressed were, from the legal framework of MSMEs in Cuba and their spheres of activity to more comprehensive issues related to institutions, the labor market, sources of income distribution, the monetary situation, the business system and distortions. in the execution of the economic-financial policy of the State.

On the occasion of the anniversary, the UN recalled that many countries face a series of interconnected challenges, which include cost of living crises, limited fiscal spaces, obstacles to accessing new sources of financing for development and climate, and conflicts.

The Day, the UN said, serves to engage in conversations and exchange ideas on how key actors, including policy makers, large businesses, financial institutions and the international community, can support micro, small and medium-sized enterprises. to advance the application of the 2030 Agenda and contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
