(ADN).- The Federal Fisheries Council has allocated 3,500 tons of shrimp annually for fishing in Río Negro. This was announced yesterday by Governor Alberto Weretilneck, who highlighted the “positive impact” that it will have on the local economy, since it will allow the crustaceans to be processed in San Antonio Oeste, generating numerous jobs throughout the San Matías Gulf.

“This decision will also allow that what is captured in other jurisdictions, outside of our San Matías Gulf, will be processed and worked in San Antonio, generating a very positive impact on the province,” said the president.

This is the first time that Río Negro obtains a social quota for this species, that is, it is captured in national waters. It also occurs in a year of exception in terms of the volume that is projected to be captured, which according to INIDEP can reach 250,000 tons per year, very close to the capture record of 2018.

Shrimp, highly valued by fish producers for its short life cycle, high growth rate and great reproductive potential, has become one of the most sought-after marine resources at a national level. This increase in the catch quota will not only contribute to the reactivation of the Río Negro fishing industry, but will also address the urgent need for employment in the port area.

The processing and unloading of these additional tons of shrimp on provincial soil will boost the local economy, strengthening the installed infrastructure and creating hundreds of new jobs in the region. This measure is organized through the Federal Fisheries Council, established under the Federal Fisheries Regime, which regulates all activities related to the fishing of shrimp and other marine species.

The announcement represents a step forward in the recovery and strengthening of the fishing industry in Río Negro, positioning San Antonio Oeste as a key center for shrimp fishing and processing in Argentina.

The province expressed its gratitude for the efforts and support of the President of the Federal Fisheries Council, Juan Antonio López Cazorla, his team, the representatives of the Executive Branch and the Provinces of Santa Cruz (Engineer Ricardo Patterson and Secretary of Fisheries Harold Bark), and of Tierra del Fuego, Carlos Cantú.
