This June 30, Casa de Nariño will open its doors to members of the LGBTI+ community in a significant celebration of International LGBTI+ Pride Day. According to a joint statement from the Presidency and the Ministry of Equality, the events will include the raising of the flag that represents sexual and gender diversity in the parade ground of the Presidential Palace.

“The raising of the flag in the main square in the Casa de Nariño is more than a symbol, it is a sign of our commitment to this population that has historically been stigmatized, discriminated against and excluded, especially in rural areas and ethnic communities” said the official statement.

Policies and collaborations

The Ministry of Equality and Equity, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the National Planning Department, is working on the construction of the LGBTIQ+ National Public Policy document using the CONPES methodology. This effort seeks to establish a solid framework for the protection and promotion of the rights of the LGBTI+ community in Colombia.

Context International LGBTI+ Pride Day

This year’s celebration has special significance as it coincides with the 55th anniversary of the uprising against police oppression and discrimination in a New York bar, an event that marked a milestone in the fight for gay rights worldwide. “We join the voices that were raised against police oppression and discrimination 55 years ago and that were heard around the world,” the Presidency said in its statement.
