The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Klaveren, today handed over the rotating presidency of the Brasilia Consensus to his Colombian counterpart, Luis Gilberto Murillo.

“Today we hand over this presidency to Colombia, wishing it every success. You can count on Chile’s collaboration to ensure that our region remains a zone of peace and cooperation, based on dialogue and respect for the diversity of peoples. A region committed to democracy, human rights, sustainable development and social justice,” said the foreign minister during the handover.

Chile assumed the rotating presidency of the Brasilia Consensus on January 8, 2024. During that period, the country worked to address the challenges set out in the regional body’s roadmap, identifying disaster risk management and the fight against organized crime as priority areas.

One of the milestones during Chile’s leadership was the holding of the First Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Public Security and Organized Crime, which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was inaugurated by the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric Font.

In addition, meetings of chancellors and meetings of high authorities in education were held; natural disaster risk management; migration; gender; energy, and health.

The Brasilia Consensus was officially established in October 2023, with the aim of being a pragmatic body that seeks to address the challenges of the region with concrete initiatives.
