The Magdalena Regional Autonomous Corporation (Corpamag) and the Institute for Marine and Coastal Research (Invemar) carried out the final dissemination of agreement 271 of 2023, focused on monitoring and evaluating the environmental quality of the coastal zone of the department.
This project focuses specifically on marine water quality, coastal management and beach quality in the Santa Marta district and other priority areas.
Invemar, with its extensive research experience, has developed scientific activities that have generated valuable technical information on the environmental conditions of the region.
This information strengthens Corpamag’s environmental management tools, allowing for better decision-making for the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.
During the socialization day, various topics included in the agreement were addressed, such as water quality and marine sediment, pollution by marine litter, monitoring of macroalgae, corals and coastal erosion.
In addition, environmental awareness and ocean literacy actions were highlighted, integrated into the Blue Schools strategy, benefiting more than 3,000 people, including students and teachers from schools in Magdalena.
Paul Laguna Panetta, Deputy Director of Environmental Management at Corpamag, stressed the importance of these results for the planning and execution of priority actions in Santa Marta, especially in the decontamination of marine waters and rivers, as part of the “Blue Agenda 500 Years” strategy.
For her part, Janeth Vivas, Head of the Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Prevention and Protection Line of the Invemar Marine Quality Program, highlighted the importance of updating this data to guide decisions at local, regional and national levels to benefit the environmental quality of coastal ecosystems.
The socialization had the participation of entities such as the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, National Natural Parks of Colombia, Magdalena Regional Attorney’s Office, Santa Marta District Mayor’s Office, Santa Marta Port Society, Ciénaga Mayor’s Office, Magdalena Regional Ombudsman’s Office, DADSA and various private companies.
The results of this diagnosis will be available in the Marine Environmental Information System (SIAM), facilitating its access for different interested audiences.
