In a message on the social network X, the Cuban foreign minister stressed that the popular decision must be respected and reiterated the Caribbean nation’s unrestricted support for the proclamation of Latin America as a zone of peace.

During the early hours of June 28, 2009, soldiers broke into the home of Honduran President José Manuel Zelaya and expelled him to Costa Rica, thereby carrying out a coup d’état against him orchestrated by Washington and the nation’s oligarchy.

The international community unanimously condemned the breakdown of constitutional order in Honduras and no government in the world recognized the coup junta.

After the 2009 coup, Zelaya and popular sectors began a resistance fight that culminated in the victory of Xiomara Castro, who won the November 2021 general elections.
