The charges, designed to trigger controlled avalanches, are placed and detonated remotely, allowing large accumulations of snow to be managed safely and effectively.

The avalanche risk alert was issued last week by the Chilean High Mountain School due to an accumulation of snow almost four meters in some areas of the mountain sector of the province of Los Andes.

In response, the Provincial Presidential Delegation and the Army of that country coordinated the implementation of the Helibomb system to prevent landslides in the Ojos de Agua cordon area.

It should be noted that the snow slope reached 37°, and avalanches form when the slopes are between 20° and 60°.

Priority to road safety

Delegate Cristian Aravena highlighted that they are going to prioritize road safety on Route CH 60. “Safe passability is a necessity on our CH-60 route and in response to risk reports issued by the Chilean Army, we have found ourselves in the need, in an unprecedented way, to carry out artificial avalanche controls,” he stated.

The measures implemented included the controlled detonation of explosives from helicopters, allowing the slopes to be stabilized and thus reducing the risk of avalanches. According to the Chilean official, this method ensures risk reduction for all users.

From the Chilean sector of the Cristo Redentor pass, they reported that the channels in which they will warn about news will be the X accounts @UPFronterizos or @CFLosLibertadores.
