This is how the Canale Group plant (photo on website) worked in San Rafael.

The Canale factory in San Rafael, 80 years of history

Founded in 1942 in Real del Padre, Canale began producing and processing tomatoes, but over time it expanded to the production of canned peppers and peaches. The factory continued to grow to include the production of sweets and jams by drying fruit.

In 2010, Canale entered bankruptcy and received $150 million pesos from the National State to continue its manufacturing activity. Despite this support, the factory was unable to sustain itself, culminating in the recent closure and subsequent loss of jobs.

Uncertainty over the effects of the Bases Law

This closure represents a significant blow to the economy of San Rafael in general, but specifically to that of this small district of 6,500 inhabitants. The factory not only provided employment but also served as a driving force for the development of the area.

The Law of Bases, which was approved in the early hours of this Friday after 16 hours of debate in the Chamber of Deputies of the Nation, has been defended by the Executive and the dialogue-oriented and allied forces, and has been fought by the opposition to Javier Milei’s administration, especially by the different Justicialist and left-wing blocs.

In any case, despite having managed to introduce modifications, this legislation will propose a new labor and productive scenario for the country. This has been expressed by numerous economists who have followed the treatment of the Bases Law.
