Subfluvial fiber optic cable will arrive from Brazil that will connect Leticia

The ICT Minister, Mauricio Lizcano, announced that On July 1st, the subriver fiber optic cable will arrive that will connect the city of Tabatinga, in Brazil, to the municipality of Leticia in the Amazon. This deployment would allow for fiber optic internet in the Colombian Amazon.

“Thanks to a joint effort with the Brazilian Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, we reached an agreement between Telebrás and Internexa to extend the optical fiber to Tabatinga, Brazil, and from there deploy it to Leticia. Today we can tell all Amazonians that with this connection, high-speed Internet arrives that will solve the connectivity problem in this region, by expanding the coverage, quality and capacity of the backbone networks.””, commented the ICT Minister, Mauricio Lizcano.

According to MinTIC, once the optical fiber reaches Leticia, it is planned to connect, initially, 9,705 households of strata 1 and 2 in the department of Amazonas, 8,547 of them in Leticia, and 1,158 in Puerto Nariño. This will be done in partnership with the company Internexa.

The ministry highlighted that for this project a technical working group will be created for the planning and analysis of the connection between the two cities. This group will be coordinated by the Telecommunications Secretariat of the Ministry of Communications of Brazil and the Vice Ministry of Connectivity of the ICT Ministry of Colombia.
