This Friday a sign was placed on the Costanera de Posadas to mark Manuel Belgrano’s historic passage through this region. In addition, a clone of the historic sarandí was planted, in commemoration of his legacy.

Manuel Belgrano, active protagonist of the May Revolution of 1810, joined the Government Board as a member and in September of the same year, he was sent to Misiones and Paraguay to defend the revolutionary cause. Although historical data on Belgrano’s expedition to Paraguay abound, information regarding his passage through the current province of Misiones is scarce. Mainly mentioned are his arrival in Candelaria, the preparation and crossing of the Paraná River, and the military actions on Paraguayan soil. However, the Belgrano Regulation for Missionary Towns was deeply analyzed.

The investigations and reflections carried out during the Belgranian Year 2020 motivated the rescue and valorization of the places in Misiones where Belgrano was. This is how the “Belgraniana Route Project” was born, promoted by various institutions such as the Secretariat of State for Culture of Misiones, the PROFAE of the National University of Misiones, the Board of Historical Studies of Misiones, the Belgranian Institute of Las Misiones, the Agrotechnical Institute Salesiano Pascual Gentilini, the Cachapé Viajero Project, and several municipalities of Misiones and Corrientes. Historians, teachers and students also joined the team, working in a map workshop convened by PROFAE to identify and locate the sites visited by Belgrano. The result was the reconstruction of the complete itinerary of the expedition and the creation of an interactive map available on the uMap platform.

The objective of the project was to constitute a tourist, cultural, historical and educational circuit that covers the places in Misiones visited by Belgrano since his entry into the region, the crossing of the Paraná River, and his return in 1811 after the withdrawal of Paraguay. These roads, belonging to the old Guaraní-Jesuit missions, are of great historical-cultural value.
