The rebound in covid has caused 5 deaths in June and an average of 2 admissions per day

The incidence of Covid, although it seems to be starting to slow down in the escalation, continues to rise and its consequences are once again impacting the most vulnerable groups. The curve began to rise in La Rioja at the end of May and only during this month of June, already about to say goodbye, the coronavirus has added five new fatalities in the region, in addition to an average of two hospital admissions per day.

It was expected. With the arrival of good weather, the increase in social interactions and the withdrawal of seasonal viruses, such as influenza, have once again cleared the way for transmission of SARS-CoV-2. After remaining between 10.36 and 13.82 cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the first weeks of May, its incidence increased to 62.18 on June 2, 110.18 seven days later and currently at 117.46, according to the latest official report, corresponding to week 25, from June 17 to 23. The same trend can be seen at the national level, according to the report made public this Friday by the Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance System (Sivira), which reflected an incidence IN SPAIN of 151 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on June 23, compared to 136.9 the previous week. The weekly report, prepared by the Carlos III Health Institute, also details that while the positivity rate is 0.2% for influenza (0.5% in the previous week) and 0% (0.2% seven days earlier) for RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), in the case of SARS-CoV-2 it has climbed from 31.7% to 34.9%.

Active contingency plan

The surge in cases has been felt in recent weeks in the form of a peak in the number of patients in La Rioja hospitals, especially in cases of elderly patients and chronic pathologies, in which the virus causes a decompensation of their condition. In the first 27 days of June, until last Thursday, the number of people admitted with Covid in the region has risen to 59 admissions, two per day on average. In fact, twenty people remain hospitalized in Logroño and Calahorra, after 5 new admissions and 2 discharges.

The peak in demand for care activated the planned contingency plan and, after the long weekend of La Rioja Day and San Bernabé, beds were doubled in two Internal Medicine check-ups at the San Pedro Hospital, a strategy that is still in force. “Although the two Internal Medicine check-ups, specifically 6A and 6B, are still doubled, there is a low occupancy of double rooms, 20 out of 45, but they have been left available just in case, although the forecast is that in the next few days it will no longer be necessary,” Health sources confirmed to Diario LA RIOJA on Friday.

Without the horror that the virus caused in a still fresh past, the most dramatic statistics do not stagnate: in the last two weeks, four people have died from Covid, which raises the number of victims during the month of June to five, to 14 this year 2024 and to 1,006 the total since the health nightmare began in March 2020.
